The most common type of solar cells in solar panels is silicon solar cells. While these types of cells are popular, it`s important to note that they`re also not very efficient. While this is due to several different factors, such factors are really too technical for this basic discussion of solar panels.
The next important concept in understanding solar panels is how the individual solar cells work in the solar panel. Groups of connected solar cells form photovoltaic arrays. And groups of these arrays form a single photovoltaic module.
On a more detailed level, how do the individual solar cells in the solar panel transform sunlight into electricity? Light consists of tiny particles of energy that are known as “photons.” The sun emits these photos via sunlight, which hit the solar cells in your solar power panels. As each photon hits the semiconductor in the cells (usually silicon), the silicon atom becomes ionized by moving its energy to the outermost electron. The energy created in the releasing of the electron produces electric current that you can use in your home.
It`s important to note how solar power panels function throughout the day. In particular, the conversion of sunlight into electricity slows down or stops completely when less sunlight reaches the panels. That could happen when a cloud blocks the sun or while the sun is setting. You may be wondering how the system of solar panels function at nighttime when the sun`s not out.
