The Edge of Do It Yourself Solar Power Over Fossil Fuels

One of the most practical reasons for building do it yourself solar power is one of practicality: the world`s supplies of coal, gas and oil won`t last forever. To meet the world`s energy needs (starting with our own homes) we have several options. Fossil fuels include just a few of them.

How prolific are fossil fuels in today`s world? You might be surprised. In fact, fossil fuels create roughly two-thirds of Earth`s electrical power. And they also produce 95% of Earth`s total energy requirements. Yes, that`s right—95%! We use fossil fuels for a variety of applications, including transportation, heating, and so on. How do we transform fossil fuels into energy? We must first crush coal into a light dust and then burn it. On the other hand, we can burn gas and oil directly, in order to produce energy. The process of transforming fossil fuels into electricity is a little more complicated. It involves heating water to create steam. That steam then turns turbines, which then turn generators that create electrical power.

So what makes fossil fuels so problematic that we should consider do it yourself solar power?

The primary drawback of fossil fuels is the copious amount of pollution that they create. Unless you live in an underground cave, then you`ve likely heard of the “greenhouse effect.” Well, the burning of fossil fuels creates carbon dioxide, which worsens the greenhouse effect. So if letting the Earth fry itself is a bad then, then it`s important that we reduce our burning of fossil fuels.

In fact, coal is a relatively worse polluter than gas or oil. That`s because it also creates sulphur dioxide, which is a gas that helps to produce acid rain. Although it`s possible to reduce the gas before releasing such gases into the environment, it creates yet another argument for creating do it yourself solar power.

Another major drawback of using fossil fuels to produce energy is that they`re not a renewable source of energy. In a nutshell, once you`ve burned bits of coal, gas, or oil—it`s vanished into the air (and dirtier air, at that). This wouldn`t particularly be a problem if we were consuming less fossil fuel than in the past. However, here`s a fact that justifies considering do it yourself solar power: since the year 1900, our fossil fuel usage has almost doubled every two decades! It could be argued that fossil fuels are technically renewable since they can create oil fields and coal seams. However, the problem is that we`d have to wait millions of years for them to form!

Then there are some logistical nightmares related to turning fossil fuels into power. For instance, power stations fueled by coal nearly need a continuous supply of coal. Then there`s the issue of mining coal. The mining of coal can be challenging, perilous, and can have quite a destructive impact on the local landscape.

After taking an objective look at the types of energy sources available, do it yourself solar power should certainly become a viable option. It`s clean, cost-effective, and convenient. What more could anyone want?
